Key Steps to Prevent Birth Defects

1. Talk with Your Healthcare Provider:
If you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, regular check-ups with your healthcare provider are vital. During these visits, discuss:

​

  • Medical conditions (like diabetes or obesity) that may impact pregnancy.

  • Family history of birth defects.

  • Medicines you are taking, and consult your provider before starting or stopping any medication.

  • Vaccinations recommended during pregnancy to protect you and your baby.

2. Avoid Harmful Substances:
Substances like nicotine (in cigarettes, e-cigarettes, or vape cartridges), alcohol, and illicit drugs can cause severe pregnancy complications, including birth defects, premature birth, and infant death.

  • If quitting feels overwhelming, seek help from your healthcare provider, call 1-800-QUIT-NOW, or join local support groups like Alcoholics Anonymous.

3. Take Care of Your Overall Health:
Maintaining your overall health during pregnancy is critical for both you and your baby:

  • Prevent infections like COVID-19 or cytomegalovirus.

  • Manage existing health conditions like diabetes.

  • Treat fevers above 101°F promptly.

  • Avoid environments that may cause overheating, like hot tubs.

  • Aim for a healthy weight before and during pregnancy.

4. Get 400 Micrograms of Folic Acid Daily:
Folic acid, a B vitamin, is crucial in preventing birth defects of the brain and spine. Ensure you’re getting 400 micrograms of folic acid daily through fortified foods, supplements, or both.
